Types of Attic Insulation

Blown-In Fiberglass (Loose-Fill)

This is the most popular choice for older homes across Cook, DuPage, and Lake Counties and for good reason. Cellulose is made from recycled paper that's been treated so it won't burn or grow mold. We blow it in with a machine that fills every corner of your attic floor around pipes, joists, wiring, everything, so there are no cold spots left uncovered.

Blown-In Cellulose

Blown-in fiberglass is made from spun glass fibers and is an excellent, budget-friendly choice for attics with a clean, even floor and good structural condition. It's non-combustible, resists moisture, and installs fast. We use it frequently in newer homes in Will County, Porter County, and the Northwest Indiana suburbs.

Spray Foam (Open-Cell)

Spray foam does two things at once: it insulates, and it seals air leaks at the same time. That makes it the best choice when your attic has a lot of gaps or when you want maximum performance.

Spray Foam (Closed-Cell)

Rigid foam panels are cut to fit and installed on attic knee walls, sloped ceilings, or roof decks where blown-in insulation isn't practical. We often combine rigid foam with blown-in cellulose or spray foam to hit the right R-value in tricky attic configurations. Good for: finished attics, Cape Cods, homes with low-pitch rooflines common in the South Suburbs.

Rigid Foam Board

his step is not optional, and some contractors skip it. We never do. Before any insulation goes in, we seal every gap and opening in your attic floor around plumbing pipes, wiring, chimney chases, recessed lights, attic hatches, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) ducts. These are the spots where warm air actually flows through, not just conducts through. Without sealing them first, even the thickest layer of insulation won't perform the way it should.

Blown-In Fiberglass (Loose-Fill)

Glass fiber insulation that is blown into attics and fills gaps around pipes and vents. Pros: Good R-value per inch (~R-2.7/” to R-3.0/”), inexpensive, easy to install on existing attics.

Blown-In Cellulose

Made from recycled paper treated for fire resistance, cellulose is dense and blocks sound well. Pros: Excellent at filling irregular spaces, eco-friendly material, good airflow resistance.

Spray Foam (Open-Cell)

Foam that expands to fill cavities, providing both insulation and air sealing. Pros: High R-value (~R-3.5/”), seals air leaks, great for sealing rim joists or hard-to-reach spaces.

Spray Foam (Closed-Cell)

A denser foam with higher R-value (~R-6/”) per inch, suitable for very tight spaces and adds structural rigidity. Pros: Highest R-value, acts as a moisture barrier.

Board

Sheets of polystyrene or polyiso installed on attic walls or roof decks. Pros: Very high R-value per inch, can be used on attic kneewalls or roof lines, moisture-resistant.
